My Story
My name is Liliane.
I am a refugee from Uvira, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I fled my country because of the violence and ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC. Seeking safety, I came to South Africa, but even there, I faced new challenges: violence, discrimination, poverty, and days when I went to bed hungry, unsure of where my next meal would come from. Life was extremely hard.
Still, I held on to hope.
That hope carried me through until I received the chance to be resettled and begin a new life in Oregon, USA. I believe deeply that there is life after struggle, and that new beginnings are possible.
Along the way, I found healing in creativity. Crafting and sewing became my therapy, the place I turn to when I feel sad or stressed. Making handmade items helps me cope, express myself, and remind myself of the strength I carry within me.
